Archive for July, 2008

This was sent to me today in an email:
“Forget about cellphones causing car accidents. In the UK, a ridiculous 300,000 car crashes have been caused by GPS. And, according to a survey commissioned by Brit tabloid rag The Mirror, 1.5 million drivers have swerved through traffic when following their sat-nav’s instructions a little too closely.
The [...]

In 2004, we travelled with our 5th wheel to Washington and Oregon, going as far south as the Dunes area near Florence, Oregon.
Part of our trip included a visit to some of Oregon’s covered bridges and lighthouses.  There are 50 covered bridges in Oregon and 12 lighthouses.  Near Cottage Grove, we saw the Mosby Creek [...]

Does advertising drive content in magazines?  About a year ago I perused a local health-related magazine (local as in Canadian) and I wonder.   I had started to enjoy the magazine again because it seemed to be focusing more on the right whole foods to eat for good health. Until I got to the issue in [...]

I love this time of year.  And I love Farmer’s Markets.  I love going and seeing all of the delicious-looking, mostly local, produce lined up in the bins.  I love BC fruit, which is in abundance at our local Farmer’s Market every summer.  I am a berry-aholic.  Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries – oh my!
Here’s a [...]

This was in the letters to the editor section of a religious organization’s magazine that is sent out to all churches and church members within their “conference”:
“Not what we wear?
If a person were invited to Buckingham Palace to see the queen, would they wear blue jeans? I wonder if they’d even let them in. Even [...]

Heath Ledger RIP

This makes me sick and sad to be a Christian. No wonder I want to hide my light under a bushel, most days. Some fundamentalist from Westboro Baptist church is going to picket Heath Ledger’s funeral because he played a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain. They (Westboro Church) issued the following “news release”.

Funny I don’t [...]

Pensacola Christian Colleges “rules” for its’ students.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pensacola_Christian_College
http://www.pensacolachristiancollege.com/rules.htm
Not mentioned in the above cites, but another article I read said another one of its’ rules was that you could not attend an off-campus church, only attend “their” church services at their college (mandatory 3 x a week).
Women and men are to go to separate public beaches. Women [...]

Merry Christmas?????

I received this “poem” in an email the other day.
“A message with lots of truth
A month before Christmas
When all through our land,
Not a Christian was praying
Nor taking a stand.
Why the PC Police
had taken away,
The reason for Christmas -
no one could say.
The children were told
by their schools not to sing,
About Shepherds and Wise Men
and Angels and [...]

Dh and I watched this movie a while back. While an interesting portrayal of “what’s wrong with American health care”, the movie purports to draw a link between countries that have socialised medicine (U.K., France, Canada) and the longevity of the citizens of those countries compared to the US. There may be some truth to [...]

I don’t know if anyone reads any of the notes I publish. I guess I hope you do. I read this over at www.theshovel.net (with acknowledgments to the author and creator of this website and this piece). It brought tears to my eyes and I hope it can be an encouragement to some of you [...]
